Africa Progress Panel statement on British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s comments in New York

31 Jul 2007

The Africa Progress Panel welcomes British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s commitment today to the important goal of pursuing the commitments made to Africa.

Its Chairman, Mr Kofi Annan, this afternoon commented: “As we stand at the mid point of the Millennium Development Goals, Mr Brown’s call to all to make renewed and concerted efforts to stand by promises on Africa is both timely and crucial. “We hope that his words will be supported and acted upon by all world leaders.

As Africa knows, the only promises that truly count are the promises that are met. “

An integral element of this action is engaging the energy of the entire international community, both within Africa and amongst its development partners, to work to deliver on the promises they have made.

In Africa, delivering on commitments has been seen to bear fruit. “The MDGs are a promise and an opportunity for Africa, and we have a collective duty to ensure that we make the most of them.”
