Editor's Diary

The APP Editor’s Diary is being published to mark the second anniversary of the APP Bulletin. Since November 2008, this newsletter has tried to capture, as succinctly as possible, the main events and trends relevant to Africa’s political, economic and social progress, including commentary on significant news, announcements by African regional bodies and governments and initiatives by Africa’s partners in the G8, G20 or international organizations. It has been a challenge to remain loyal to its strict two-page format –especially through key events such as the run up to Copenhagen, the World Cup and the series of elections in Africa.

The Bulletin has developed its voice and identity through its editorial section that every two weeks anticipates or responds to pressing current events concerning Africa. The editorial highlights issues that are relevant to the work of the APP. It also sets a theme for each issue which is supported by a cartoon – usually selected from the African

media – and a chart, map or infographic. A section on opinions and blogs also addresses the overall theme and highlights the running debates.

The original distribution list for the bulletin was just 11 people – the members of the Panel. Then our partners and immediate interlocutors were added. It soon got passed around, requests came in and it became apparent that the bulletin is of interest to a broader constituency, both in Africa and elsewhere. As of November 2010, there are about 1,500 recipients, many of whom circulate the bulletin within their institutions.

The compilation of each bulletin is a team effort led by Temitayo Omotola. Design and graphics are in the hands of Carolina Rodriguez; Violaine Beix prepares the French edition; and Sandra Engelbrecht and number of colleagues carry out the research behind each issue.

Described as a ‘readable must-read’ by one recipient and as ‘a welcome intrusion by another, the APP Bulletin has become one of the most visible products of the APP Secretariat. We are grateful for the feedback and responses received and delighted to see it spark relevant debate. As always, we welcome your suggestions and comments.

This publication marks the end of Michael Keating’s term as Executive Director and therefore as the APP Bulletin Editor. We will ensure that the Bulletin continues to provide a snapshot of the news relevant to Africa’s development and noteworthy commentary on key issues concerning the APP.
